How often should I bathe my dog?

E-mail Print PDF

A clean dog is a healthier dog. Cleanliness is directly tied to your dog's health. If you use proper quality dog products you cannot bathe your dog too often. If your pooch smells or gets dirty, give a bath! They may not look exactly like they do coming home from the groomer, but at least they smell good. Bathing also helps an itchy or scratching dog.

Keep in mind when you bathe your own dog:

  • Use shampoo specifically for dogs, and preferrably for your specific dog (ask Axcium Dog Spa for recommendations!) Human shampoo has a different PH than shampoo for dogs and should not be used.
  • Make sure your dog is brushed out thoroughly and mat free before going in the tub. Bathing a matted dog worsens the problem.
  • Most dogs prefer the water to be slightly warm.
  • Be careful not to get water or soap in their nose and ear canals.
  • Soap the dog in twice for best result.
  • Long coated dogs should be conditioned to help keep the coat mat free.
  • Make sure you rinse thoroughly, leaving traces of shampoo can cause skin irritation.
  • Your dog will find the bath experience more enjoyable if you throw in a gentle massage :)
